Illustration software usually means renting Adobe or buying Clip Studio. Krita is the third path: a GPLv3 painting app funded by a foundation and artists who want pro tools without a subscription. It is not a toy GIMP skin — it is a brush-first workstation.
We used Krita 5.3.2 for character concepts, flat comics pages, and a short frame-by-frame animation test on Linux and Windows. The brush engine and stabilizer are why people stay.
Three weeks with a Wacom Intuos on Windows and a Huion on Linux: concept painting, ink-and-tone comic pages, PSD round-trips with a collaborator on Photoshop, and a short animation timeline experiment.
